Target bucked conventional wisdom in 2017 when it adopted a strategy of building out stores as fulfillment centers to drive digital sales, a move that has paid off during the pandemic as shoppers switched to online shopping and curbside pickup. Three-quarters of Americans live within 10 miles of a Target, making the stores ideal locations for order fulfillment, Chief Operating Officer John Mulligan said.
