Researchers at Virginia Tech have developed a way to de-ice surfaces without using energy for heat or causing chemical runoff. Their "ice bridging" technique places a pattern of stripes on a hydrophilic silicon dioxide surface to attract water that turns to ice, which then attracts more water through evaporative condensation.
