Successful pig heart transplants into baboons may soon pave the way for trials of pig-to-human organ transplants, according to findings published in Nature. In the study, baboons lived well past the benchmark survival period that the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation set to determine whether xenotransplantation could be safe for human trials.
