Academic research institutions need more Black people in leadership positions, and lab leaders should open conversations about how to support the Black community, say structural biologist Nikea Pittman, virologist Kishana Taylor and other Black scientists. "Creating a welcoming environment is very different from inviting Black people to university functions, academic programmes and professional society meetings simply to increase the number of us," says cancer biologist Henry Henderson.
