The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research has been awarded a $1.8 million grant to look for ways to turn coal tar pitch into carbon fiber. Researchers look to transform coal tar into a liquid crystal that can then be turned into carbon fiber, which could be used in the manufacture of a number of goods.
