Windstream Communications will deploy the 5G licenses it won in a recent auction to provide fixed wireless service in "thinly populated" rural areas, said Jeff Small, the head of the regional telecom's Kinetic business unit. The telecom will use millimeter wave spectrum in the 24 GHz and 28 GHz bands to bring gigabit service to 5 million homes, 2 million of which are outside its footprint.
