Last fall's wildfires in five counties of Northern California led Pacific Bell, an AT&T subsidiary, to request an emergency authorization from the Federal Communications Commission to suspend the carrier's interstate telecommunications, allowing a transition from copper circuits to a new fiber network. AT&T is doing similar work in the Florida Keys because of damage from Hurricane Irma.
