Experts warn that smart cities, especially public transportation systems, are appealing targets for cybercriminals due to an increased reliance on tech "for everything from lighting and traffic control to public transportation," says Tom Brennan of security services firm IOActive. Even simple bugs allowed to infiltrate public transportation systems "can cause complete chaos," Brennan said.
