Researchers expressed concerns over CMS policies that cover reimbursement for patients with abandoned cardiac implantable electronic device leads who undergo MRI exams after an analysis in JAMA Cardiology showed that none of the patients experienced any adverse events, such as sustained arrythmias. "It is hoped that future registry data will be sufficiently compelling to prompt CMS to further modify the [National Coverage Determination] and to remove the coverage restriction for patients with an abandoned lead undergoing MRI with or without a pacemaker or defibrillator generator," Dr. Robert Russo wrote in a separate editorial.
