Researchers are applying host-response diagnostics and machine-learning analysis in a race to determine the cause of acute flaccid myelitis, a polio-like disease that has sickened at least 134 people -- mostly children -- in the US this year, according to the CDC. If their approach succeeds, it also could be used to aid in development of early treatments for the disease.
