Over the past 20 years, 176 online-only, open-access journals in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities have vanished from the Web as the sites stopped being maintained and another 900 online-only journals are inactive and might also disappear, according to a paper posted on the preprint server arXiv. Most online-only journals lack content preservation policies, and consensus is lacking on whether publishers, authors, libraries or universities are responsible for preservation.
