The UK's National Health Service has launched a pilot program for sequencing the genome of every baby born at an NHS hospital, and NIH Director Francis Collins says he supports genomic sequencing for all babies born in the US. Broad whole genome sequencing programs could be used to improve medical care, but only if they are "used in targeted ways that are attentive to the needs of babies, families and health systems," write research scholar Josephine Johnston and bioethicist Barbara Koenig.
