Children in more than 570 families have been struck by acute flaccid myelitis since 2014, causing long-term paralysis in some, and researchers reported in Pediatrics that the condition might be triggered by enterovirus D68. AFM and EV-D68 appear to circulate simultaneously and a significant proportion of respiratory specimens from patients with AFM contain an enterovirus, about half of which are EV-D68, and researchers are trying to identify other risk factors.
