According to the Labor Department, unemployment claims have plateaued, but companies continue to lay off employees in what might be a second phase in the employment crisis. "The labor market continues to heal from the viral recession, but unemployment remains extremely elevated and will remain a problem for at least a couple of years," says economist Gus Faucher.
