Several oil companies, including Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobil and PetroChina, say that crude oil cargoes they bought from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve last year were tainted with hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas that in some cases exceeded safety levels by a factor of 250. Hydrogen sulfide is very dangerous for people and can also corrode refineries and pipelines.
