Boston-based startup Galy has developed a novel method using cotton plant stem cells to produce "incredible cotton" grown in the lab at a rate 10 times faster than those grown on farms. This lab-grown variety of cotton "can be grown anywhere, without being dependent on soil and weather conditions, and without exhausting our planet," according to the description on the H&M Foundation's website, which recently awarded Galy with its annual Global Change Award.
