San Francisco-based synthetic biology startup Pivot Bio conducted more than 11,000 field trials of its PROVEN microbes as an alternative to synthetic fertilizer in the Midwest's so-called corn belt. The product, which provides continuous nitrogen supply and doesn't wash away from the crop roots, was found to demonstrate almost a 17-bushel-per-acre advantage over the use of a chemical-based nitrogen fertilizer.
