Oxitec has released the first batch of its biotech mosquitoes in the Florida Keys, a 12-week program that will grow about 12,000 insects for every box situated in six areas in Cudjoe Key, Ramrod Key and Vaca Key. The biotech mosquitoes released in Florida are an improved version of the original model -- unlike the first version, these mosquitoes pass on a deadly gene that decimates only female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which should result in less disease transmission because only female mosquitoes bite humans.
