Plastic bans may carry unintended consequences that policymakers need to consider when reviewing solutions for addressing plastic waste, writes Vanessa Pepino of the Stratbase ADR Institute, citing a 2018 study from the American Chemistry Council and Trucost. "Without implementing and strengthening regulatory mechanisms to penalize waste mismanagement behavior among consumers, establishments and LGUs, our bodies of water will still end up being polluted and our ecosystem adversely affected whatever alternative material we use," she writes.
