Brazilian scientists led an international group of researchers in assembling 99.1% of the commercial variety of sugarcane's total genome by mapping 373,869 genes. This will be used as the basis for genetic enhancement of sugarcane, according to the United Nation's Food & Agriculture Organization. Details of the study were reported in the journal GigaScience.
