US COVID-19 fatalities climbed to more than 8,500 in the week that ended Aug. 2, the fourth consecutive weekly increase, according to an analysis of state and county data. New infections dropped 5% to around 435,000 cases from the week before, with almost 180,000 of those cases in California, Texas and Florida.
