Study: Life expectancy may rise after bariatric surgery

A study in Sweden, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that those who underwent weight-loss surgery saw a 30% lower mortality risk from cardiovascular disease and a decrease in cancer-related mortality compared with people who received usual obesity care. The researchers found that life expectancy increased by a median three years among those who had bariatric surgery over those who didn't.
