Searching the web for information when primary care providers have been unable to diagnose the cause of an illness sometimes results in self-referrals to specialists, who then diagnose rare conditions, researchers reported in Genetics in Medicine. "While physicians can diagnose rare genetic disorders, and patients can work on their own to do the same, the best results come when both physicians and patients work together to make a diagnosis," study leader Dr. Anthony Bleyer said.
