Dr. Guillermo Umpierrez, professor of medicine and director of the Clinical Research and Metabolism Center at Emory University School of Medicine, said during the American College of Physicians Internal Medicine Meeting that primary care physicians should focus more on safety than achieving specific glycemic targets when prescribing diabetes medications for A1C reduction. "If you put into balance safety and efficacy there is no question safety is much more important," Umpierrez said.
