Millions of Medicare patients with diabetes or chronic kidney disease do not take advantage of nutrition counseling covered by the program, data showed. Medicare allows three hours of dietary counseling in the first year the benefit is used, and then two hours in following years, which registered dietitian Jennifer Weis says is better than nothing but too little time given how difficult it is to get older adults to change behaviors.
