Many Americans travel to other countries to seek lower-cost care

The high cost of hospital care in the US is leading hundreds of thousands of Americans to seek lower-cost care abroad, often in the Caribbean and Central America. One of them, Mississippi resident Donna Ferguson, went to Cancun, Mexico, recently for knee replacement surgery performed by Wisconsin surgeon Thomas Parisi, brought in a day before by North American Specialty Hospital, in an arrangement meant to allay patients' worries by providing an American physician.
