Scientists at both the University of Oxford and Moderna are already modifying their COVID-19 vaccines to work against new SARS-CoV-2 variants emerging in the UK, South Africa and Brazil. Oxford scientists are working to determine how rapidly their platform could be reconfigured, and Moderna is testing blood samples from vaccinated monkeys and people to see whether its current vaccine is effective against the variant detected in South Africa.
