A physician's perspective on achieving EHRs' potential

A plethora of diagnostic and treatment information is only a few keystrokes away from patients, but no one has developed a similarly easy-to-use search engine for EHRs to support physicians' clinical decision making, writes otolaryngologist Lloyd Minor, dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine. To achieve their full potential, EHRs must be interoperable and more responsive to health care providers' needs, and they should incorporate artificial intelligence that integrates anonymized patient records with medical literature to provide insights at the point of care, Minor writes.
