A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that youths whose mothers had gestational diabetes had higher odds of developing obesity, large waist circumference, elevated body fat and skinfolds at age 11, compared with those whose mothers didn't have gestational diabetes. Researchers also found a threefold increased odds of prediabetes and a fivefold higher type 2 diabetes risk within 10 years after pregnancy among women with gestational diabetes.
