The number of Americans hospitalized with COVID-19 jumped by 40% to over 41,000 people this past month, pushing many hospitals across the country closer to the brink. Data from the COVID-19 Tracking Project showed at least 14 states reported a new record for hospitalizations and seven more states are approaching peaks. Though the country saw more hospitalizations in New York and the Sun Belt during the earlier stages of the pandemic, more patients are now falling ill in rural areas such as the Midwest and the Mountain West, where they must depend on hospitals that may only have a handful of beds.
