Study suggests capping Medicare GME funding at $150K per resident

A study in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests the Medicare Graduate Medical Education program may overpay some hospitals, and that by capping GME funding at $150,000 per resident per year, almost $1.3 billion could be available to help reduce physician shortages in underserved areas. Lead author Candice Chen, M.D., said capping GME at the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education rate could free up enough money to expand the THC program tenfold.
