A position statement released by the American Diabetes Association and published in Diabetes Care highlighted the importance of considering a patient's needs and circumstances, as well as the evolving developmental stages, when creating an adaptive care plan for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Dr. Desmond Schatz, the ADA's 2016 president of medicine and science, noted that children's unique challenges and developmental phases include those related to independence and paying for care, puberty, growth and transition of care.
