Researchers examined 773 diabetes patients who underwent total joint arthroplasty and found significantly higher average postoperative and preoperative A1C levels among those who were insulin dependent than those who were not insulin dependent. The findings, presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, revealed that patients in the insulin-dependent group experienced a 5.2-fold increase in postoperative hyperglycemia greater than 200 mg/dL.
