A study published in The BMJ did not find a significant difference in hospital-acquired conditions, 30-day readmissions or 30-day mortality between hospitals penalized under the CMS' Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program and their nonpenalized counterparts. The authors, who studied data from 15.4 million Medicare patients and 3,238 hospitals from July 2014 through November 2016, found that safety net and teaching hospitals were more likely to be penalized under the program.
