Mayo Clinic research suggests gluten-free diets may not be healthier than other diets and could be harmful, so physicians should talk with patients who follow this type of plan and advise them that it may not be the best choice, said Dr. David Johnson, chief of gastroenterology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. The research also suggests new monitoring requirements may be needed for patients who have to follow a gluten-free diet, such as those with celiac disease, Johnson said.
