Diabetes ups risk for hippocampal calcification, study finds

Individuals with diabetes or who smoke were at a 50% and 49%, respectively, increased risk of having calcium deposits in the hippocampus, compared with those without diabetes and nonsmokers, according to a study in Radiology. Dutch researchers used a cohort of 1,991 patients, aged 45 to 96, and found an association between every additional year of age and a 5% higher risk for hippocampal calcification.
