President Joe Biden released on Thursday a 100-plus page national strategy to combat the COVID-19 pandemic that includes directing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to establish community vaccination centers, allowing the CDC to expand vaccine access through pharmacies and letting HHS recruit more health professionals to serve as vaccinators. Biden, who warns the pandemic's death toll could reach 500,000 next month, also signed 10 executive orders that direct federal agencies to use the Defense Production Act to address shortages of supplies needed for pandemic response; require mask-wearing in trains, airplanes and airports; and create a COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force and COVID-19 Pandemic Testing Board, among other measures.
