Researchers found that self-monitoring of blood glucose underestimates the severity of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, compared with continuous glucose monitoring. The findings in Endocrine Practice, based on 61 diabetes patients, revealed that the highest blood glucose values reported with SMBG by type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients were 30 mg/dL lower and 55 mg/dL lower than that detected by CGM, respectively, while the lowest glucose value reported with SMBG was almost 25 mg/dL higher for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients, compared with CGM.
