A study in JAMA Internal Medicine found the proportion of emergency department visits and inpatient admissions to in-network hospitals that resulted in surprise medical bills climbed to 42.8% and 42%, respectively, in 2016, from 32.3% and 26.3% in 2010. The average out-of-network bill paid by patients also increased from $804 to $2,040 for inpatient admissions, and from $220 to $628 for ED visits, during the period.
