Two teams of researchers said they have discovered a new coronavirus variant, B.1.526, spreading in New York City and elsewhere in the Northeast that has mutations similar to those found in the variant first detected in South Africa. It carries a mutation that allows the virus to evade the body's immune response and elude monoclonal antibody drugs authorized for COVID-19.
