A UK study presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes annual meeting showed that some children who were genetically susceptible to type 2 diabetes could show metabolic signs of the disease as early as age 8. Researchers used a cohort of 4,765 children whose blood samples were tested at ages 8, 15, 18 and 25, and found that low HDL cholesterol levels were associated with an increased type 2 diabetes risk in adulthood.
