Children who experienced a moderate or severe episode of diabetic ketoacidosis had significantly lower scores on continuous performance, intelligence quotients and memory, compared with those who had mild or no DKA, according to a study in Diabetes Care. Researchers evaluated 144 children ages 4 to 9 and also found more regional and total white and gray matter volume in the brain over 18 months among those in the moderate/severe DKA group than the none/mild DKA group.
