The Energy Information Administration reports that 96% of US tight oil production and 97% of US shale gas output in 2018 came from horizontally drilled wells, up from about 15% and 14%, respectively, in 2004. There are still tens of thousands of vertical wells operating in tight oil and shale gas plays, but many of them are considered marginal wells because they only account for a small fraction of production.
