The high maintenance costs for nuclear plants make natural gas a more appealing energy source, and the US could lose nuclear energy in the coming decades, says a report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Small modular reactors and advanced reactor designs will not play a material role in the US energy market in the future, the report added.
