How one man's wildcatting campaign led to a massive oil discovery

Signs of a treasure trove of oil on Alaska's North Slope encouraged Texas wildcatter Bill Armstrong, CEO of Armstrong Oil & Gas, to embark on a years-long quest that culminated with the 2017 discovery of the three-billion-barrel Horseshoe field, the biggest discovery in decades. Armstrong sold his share in the discovery for $850 million to Australia's Oil Search even though he says the oil supplies trapped there would be worth $100 billion at current prices.
