Challenge to union "fair-share" fees gains solicitor general's support

The Office of the Solicitor General on Wednesday filed an amicus brief backing the plaintiff in a Supreme Court case challenging a union requirement to pay "fair-share" fees, which he says runs afoul of nonunion employees' First Amendment rights. Right-to-work laws, which prohibit the collection of such fees, have gained approval in 28 states, but unions say the fees are necessary to evenly distribute the costs of collective-bargaining efforts.
