A bill that would allow HHS to negotiate prices for prescription drugs covered by Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage was introduced by Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, chairman of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, and companion legislation was introduced in the Senate. The House bill, which has over 100 co-sponsors, would authorize HHS to issue a competitive license permitting generic-drug makers to produce the drug at a lower cost and give compensation to the original manufacturer if HHS and the maker of the brand-name drug fail to reach an agreement.
