A study published in Lancet Neurology found that the real-time quaking-induced conversion test may identify alpha-synuclein in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with REM sleep behavior disorder years before the onset of Parkinson's disease or Lewy body dementia symptoms. The findings showed RTRT-QuIC had a 90% sensitivity and specificity in detecting misfolded alpha-synuclein, which is linked to a higher risk of Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia.
