Diabetes ups risk for hippocampal calcification, study finds

Individuals who have diabetes or who smoke were at a 50% and 49% increased risk, respectively, of having calcium deposits in the hippocampus, compared with those without diabetes and nonsmokers, according to a study in a radiology journal. Dutch researchers used a cohort of 1,991 patients ages 45 to 96 and found an association between every additional year of age and a 5% higher risk for hippocampal calcification.
