Researchers from the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center used blue laser light and a catalyst material to attach the F-18 isotope in drug molecules, making gamma ray emission visible in imaging scans. The technique, described in the journal Science, also enabled labeling of various compounds and may prompt radiotagging of existing compounds, as well as advancements in drug development research and personalized medicine, researchers said.
